Getting the divorce information you need

When individuals are faced with the end of their marriage, they can often be overwhelmed by the emotional, financial, and practical implications of the separation. After all, divorce is a life-changing event that few people anticipate ever experiencing in their lives. That’s why it’s very important that individuals understand the divorce process and their role in it. By asking questions and gaining insight from a knowledgeable and reputable Illinois family law attorney, a person can proceed with the confidence and awareness they need to move forward and move on.

What am I responsible for?

Upon seeking legal counsel, individuals should immediately inquire about expenditures like attorney fees and other related costs. While an attorney may not be able to provide a perspective client with an exact figure, he or she should be able to explain their cost structure, billing process and any other fees that may be applied throughout the process. It is up to the individual to decide if they are comfortable with the attorney’s rates and services offered.

Once a client understands and agrees to the attorney’s fees, it’s helpful to review the steps of obtaining a divorce and what needs to happen when. Often times, the attorney may request financial documents and other information that will be used to determine arrangements like child support and/or spousal support payments. Inquiring early on about required documentation can save time and resources later on.

What happens next?

In cases where children are involved, individuals are encouraged to ask questions about the process of determining custody and visitation rights. Policies vary from state to state, so it’s always a good idea to learn about current practices and options available to parents. Similarly, individuals can ask their attorney to outline how support payments are calculated and collected.

Having the right information at the right time can help guarantee a successful, and less stressful, divorce.
