There are many reasons to opt for a prenuptial agreement

When you find that special someone and begin to plan your wedding, you’ll have many details to work through.

At some point, the idea of a prenuptial agreement may enter your mind. This will lead you to learn more, which could result in asking your soon-to-be spouse for his or her thoughts on the subject.

Before you do anything, you want to learn more about the benefits of a prenuptial agreement. This can help you decide how to best move forward:

  • With a prenuptial agreement you can protect the financial rights of any children that you may have from a prior marriage
  • It can help protect your ownership in a business
  • It can protect inheritance rights
  • It ensures that you won’t have to assume any debt that your spouse brings into the marriage (in the event of a divorce)
  • It can limit the amount of alimony that one spouse will be required to pay the other after a divorce

These are far from the only reasons to opt for a prenuptial agreement, but they are more than enough to get you thinking about this legal document. If nothing else, you want to have a serious conversation with your partner about the pros and cons.

Also, make sure the conversation is two-sided. You don’t want to make it look like you’re the only one benefitting from the creation of a prenuptial agreement. Instead, it should be clear that both of you are involved in the process. This makes it much easier to create the agreement and move on with your life together.
