Making divorce work on a budget

No one considering the prospect of ending their marriage in Illinois should be forced to base their decision on whether or not they can afford it. An important life decision like filing for divorce is difficult enough to make without the added burden of worrying about finances. Fortunately, there are ways that people can conserve resources to come to the divorce agreement that is right for them and their family.

Use your time and energy wisely

It’s always best to use time with one’s divorce attorney productively. Write down any relevant questions or concerns and present them during meetings to ensure that they are addressed. Attorney fees can be minimized by staying on topic and focused during every consultation.

Similarly, individuals can plan meetings with their spouse to discuss divorce components like child custody agreements to avoid having to resolve them in court. Many arrangements can be made privately if both parties are able to communicate efficiently and politely.

Know what money is coming in and going out

Considering that many married couples share bank accounts and credit cards, it’s important that individuals separate themselves from their spouse’s finances early in the process of filing for divorce.

Time, energy and money can be saved down the line if both parties are honest about personal income and assets. Potential disputes over issues like alimony can be prevented if all relevant income is disclosed upfront. Both parties can also avoid any future conflict by respecting and following the terms of their divorce agreement from the very beginning.

Don’t settle

Lastly, individuals should be confident and comfortable with the divorce attorney they choose. A responsible and trustworthy attorney will offer high quality services at conscientious prices.
