While emotions certainly do play an important role in how people relate to themselves and others, responding emotionally to a crisis situation can have serious consequences on the ultimate outcome of the event. And given that divorce can be considered a crisis for those that find themselves confronted with it, it’s important to consider how one’s emotions may affect the divorce process. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when faced with divorce in the state of Illinois.
Do what’s right for the kids
When it comes to making decisions regarding child custody arrangements, divorcing couples often end up in major disputes. Ultimately, any decision regarding custody and visitation rights should be based on the best interests of the children involved. As a result, it’s important to develop a child custody arrangement that promotes contact with both parents, while being realistic about the amount of time each parent can actually spend with their kids.
Neither parent should attempt to have increased visitation time in effort to pay less child support unless they are actually capable of spending that amount of time with their kids on a regular basis. Similarly, no parent should ever feel pressured to relinquish their custody rights in order to avoid conflict or litigation.
Do what’s right for yourself
Given that divorce can be a costly process and results in lifestyle changes that are often expensive as well, it’s important to consider one’s financial situation and plan for any and all expenses related to the divorce itself and the division of the household.
Beyond that, it’s important to be realistic about divorce-related costs. Of course, it’s important to seek sound legal counsel and do what’s necessary to ensure that the divorce is fair, but individuals should avoid unnecessary legal fees and litigation whenever possible.
