According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than two million marriages were performed in the United States during 2014. However, there were over 800,000 annulments and divorces across the nation over the course of the same year. In Belleville, and the rest of Illinois, couples who file for divorce may have a number of legal concerns regarding separation and could benefit from reviewing divorce statistics.

In 2014, the American annulment and divorce rate was 3.2 for every 1,000 population. In 2000, there were 944,000 annulments and divorces (4.0 for every 1,000 population). While the number of people filing for an annulment or divorce has decreased over the years, these recent statistics reveal just how many Americans are still dealing with separating from their spouse.

On the State of Illinois Data Portal’s site, additional information concerning the prevalence of marriage and divorce is provided. According to the site, 72,821 marriages took place throughout the state in 2009, while 32,460 divorces occurred. In 2009, the rate of annulment and divorce was 2.5, whereas the marriage rate was 5.6 (out of 1,000 population). Illinois has also seen a decline in both the number of marriages performed and the number of divorces and annulments in comparison to previous years. For example, more than 94,000 couples were married in the state in 1991 and over 45,000 annulments and divorces occurred.

For couples going through a divorce, a plethora of legal hurdles may arise, such as property division, child support, alimony and even emotional issues. As a result, it is critical for couples who are considering divorce to approach the process properly.
