With the help of a parenting agreement, you should have a clear idea of what’s expected of you in regards to co-parenting.

Child custody trouble can quickly spoil the summer vacation you’ve been looking forward to, so make sure you eliminate any potential concerns before they bog you down.

Here are a few tips that are sure to work in your favor:

  • Set a schedule, share it with the other parent and stick with it. Once you have a schedule in place, you don’t want to make too many (if any) changes. Instead, work through the finer details with the other parent so you are on the same track.
  • Don’t violate your custody agreement. You should review your custody agreement in full detail to ensure that you don’t do anything that could land you in hot water. For example, your agreement may say that you can’t travel out of the country with your child.
  • Encourage your child to communicate with the other parent during your trip. If you fight against this, your child may begin to resent you and “shut down” during a time that is supposed to be fun. If your child wants to communicate with your ex, don’t put a stop to this.

A summer vacation with your child can be a lot of fun. If you have concerns about child custody mistakes, don’t hesitate to take as many steps as necessary to get on the right track. This will put your mind at ease as your vacation closes in and you begin to finalize the details.
