In your mind, you have everything planned out. You know that you want to ask your spouse for a divorce, and you have a clear idea of the approach you’ll take.

But then something happens. You’re face to face with your spouse and you freeze. You don’t know what to say or do.

If you’re concerned about this happening to you, here are five tips that can ease the stress of asking for a divorce:

  • Prepare for everything. You don’t know what will happen when you actually sit down to discuss ending your marriage by divorce, so prepare yourself for every possible situation.
  • Choose the right place. It’s hard enough to ask for a divorce. Don’t complicate matters by attempting to do so in the wrong place, such as a crowded restaurant.
  • Don’t dive into the details. It’s tempting to ask for a divorce and immediately turn to details such as child custody, child support and property division. Doing so will complicate the conversation, so save these details for later.
  • Don’t get into an argument. If your spouse loses their temper, end the conversation for the present and remove yourself from the situation.
  • Stick with your plan. For example, your spouse may try to talk you out of filing for divorce. If you know it’s the right decision, stick with your plan and continue forward.

Asking for a divorce can bring a lot of stress and anxiety to your life. However, once you do so, you’ll feel much better. At that point, you can turn your attention to the divorce process and the many steps you must take to protect your legal rights.
