How should you tell your family about your divorce?

Many people spend so much time thinking of a way to tell their children about their divorce that they overlook the rest of their family.

From your parents to your siblings to your extended family, there's a good chance you'll want to inform these people about what's happening in your life.

While this sounds simple enough, you know that each and every conversation requires attention to detail.

Here are three tips for telling your family about your divorce:

  • Decide on how much you're comfortable sharing: It's one thing to tell someone you're getting a divorce, but another entirely to deal with the follow-up questions in the appropriate manner. For example, you may or may not be comfortable explaining why you're putting an end to your marriage.
  • Ask for help: Along with telling your family about your divorce, don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Maybe you need help with your children as you go through the divorce process. Or maybe you need someone to lean on during those bad days.
  • Update them as the process moves forward: Things can and will change as your divorce moves through the court system. You don't have to keep everyone updated in regard to changes, but there are some people who should know exactly what's going on.

When you do these things, you'll find it much easier to tell your family about your divorce. Once you have it out in the open, it's easier to move through the process with a clear mind. This puts you in a better position to focus on yourself, your legal rights and your future.
