Woman's gambling winnings withheld over back child support

For those who are unable to pay their child support, the consequences can be devastating. In addition to potentially spending time behind bars, parents in Belleville and across Illinois who owe back child support may also face financial ramifications. As a result, those unable to fulfill their child support obligations should try to resolve the situation as soon as they can. For some, modifying a child support order may be a smart decision and could help them secure lower payments, depending on their circumstances.

An Arkansas woman who recently won $1,000 from a lottery ticket had her winnings withheld as a result of unpaid child support. However, the unpaid child support belonged to her grandson, who cashed the winning ticket. The woman's grandson said that while he has made child support payments, he still owes $14,000.

According to state law, lottery tickets belong to the individual who claims them. Furthermore, if the person who claims a winning lottery ticket has unpaid child support or state taxes, their winnings can be withheld. The woman's grandson can file an action and protest the withheld winnings for 30 days.

Custodial parents who are owed back child support often experience financial hardships, while those unable to pay run the risk of facing harsh penalties. Parents who are struggling with any hardships related to child support matters may want to consider the benefits of contacting an attorney and discussing the details of their case.
